SCALING-OUT DATA CENTERS WITH EDR 100G INFINIBAND

Faster servers based on PCIe 3.0, combined with high-performance storage and applications that use increasingly complex computations, are causing data bandwidth requirements to spiral upward. As servers are deployed with next generation processors, High-Performance Computing (HPC) environments and Enterprise Data Centers (EDC) will need every last bit of bandwidth delivered with Mellanox’s next generation of Extended Data Rate (EDR) InfiniBand high-speed smart switches.

WORLD’S FIRST SMART SWITCH

Built with Mellanox’s latest Switch-IB™ 2 InfiniBand switch device, EDR uses efficient 64/66 encoding while increasing the per lane signaling rate to 25Gb/s. SB7800 provides up to thirty-six 100Gb/s full bi-directional bandwidth per port. These stand-alone switches are an ideal choice for top-of-rack leaf connectivity or for building small to extremely large sized clusters. SB7800 is the world’s first smart network switch, designed to enable in-network computing through the Co-Design Scalable Hierarchical Aggregation and Reduction Protocol (SHARP) technology. The Co-Design architecture enables the usage of all active data center devices to accelerate the communications frameworks, resulting in order of magnitude applications performance improvements. SB7800 enables efficient computing with features such as static routing, adaptive routing, congestion control and enhanced VL mapping to enable modern topologies (SlimFly, Dragonfly+, 6D Torus). These ensure the maximum effective fabric bandwidth by eliminating congestion hot spots. The SB7800 switch has best-in-class design to support low power consumption. ATIS weighted power consumption is 136W for a fully-populated switch. Power is further reduced if not all ports are used or if partially utilized.

COLLECTIVE COMMUNICATION ACCELERATION

Collective communication is a term used to describe communication patterns in which all members of a group of communication endpoints participate. Collective communications are commonly used in HPC communication protocols such as MPI and SHMEM (Open-SHMEM). Collective operations have implications on overall application performance and scale. SB7800 introduces the Co-design SHARP technology, which enables the switch to manage collective communications using embedded hardware. Switch-IB 2 improves the performance of selected collective operations by processing the data as it traverses the network, eliminating the need to send data multiple times between end-points. This decreases the amount of data traversing the network and additional benefit of freeing up CPU resources for computation rather than using them to process communication. The network portion of the reduction operation on a fully-populated three-level fat-tree can be completed in less than three microseconds.

MANAGEMENT

SB7800, dual-core x86 CPU, comes with an onboard subnet manager, enabling simple, out-of-the-box fabric bring-up for up to 2k nodes. SB7800 switch runs the same MLNX-OS® software package as Mellanox FDR products to deliver complete chassis management, to manage the firmware, power supplies, fans and ports.

SUSTAINED NETWORK PERFORMANCE

Built with Mellanox’s sixth latest SwitchX® InfiniBand switch device, the SX6036 provides up to thirty-six 56Gb/s full bi-directional bandwidth per port. These stand-alone switches are an ideal choice for top-ofrack leaf connectivity or for building small to extremely large sized clusters. FDR InfiniBand technology moves from 8b/10b encoding to a more efficient 64/66 encoding while increasing the per lane signaling rate to 14Gb/s. Mellanox end-to-end systems can also take advantage of the efficiency of 64/66 encoding using Mellanox FDR-10 supporting 20% more bandwidth over QDR using the same cables/connectors designed for 40GbE.

WHY SOFTWARE DEFINED NETWORK (SDN)?

Data center networks have become exceedingly complex. IT managers cannot optimize the networks for their applications leading to high CAPEX/OPEX, low ROI and IT headaches. Mellanox InfiniBand SDN Switches ensure separation between control and data planes. InfiniBand enables centralized management and view of network. Dell EMC Isilon F800 all-flash scale-out NAS storage, powered by the Isilon OneFS operating system, uses a revolutionary modular architecture to provide a powerful, yet simple scale-out storage platform to speed access to massive amounts of unstructured data, while dramatically reducing cost and complexity. With a highly dense design that contains 4 nodes within a single 4U chassis, Isilon F800 delivers extreme performance and efficiency for your most demanding unstructured data applications and workloads.

Performance: Isilon F800 all-flash delivers up to 250,000 IOPS and 15 GB/sec aggregate throughput in a single chassis configuration. With Isilon F800, you can scale performance up to 9M IOPS and 540 GB/s of aggregate throughput in a single Isilon cluster. You also have a choice of dual 10 GbE or dual 40 GbE front-end networking ports. For backend networking, you can choose from high performance InfiniBand QDR or 40 GbE networking.

Capacity: Isilon F800 all-flash provides massive scalability and allows you to scale storage capacity from 96 TB to 924 TB in a single 4U chassis and up to 33 PB in a single Isilon cluster. Each Isilon F800 chassis houses 60 SSDs with a capacity choice of 1.6 TB, 3.2 TB or 15.4 TB per drive.

Efficiency: Isilon scale-out storage delivers up to 80 percent storage utilization versus about 50 percent for traditional platforms. Isilon SmartDedupe data deduplication software enhances storage efficiency to reduce your physical storage requirements. Isilon’s policy based, automated tiering options, including Isilon SmartPools and CloudPools software, allow you to optimize storage resources and further lower costs.

Simplicity: You can install, configure, and have an Isilon F800 all-flash cluster online in less than 10 minutes. It’s also simple to add Isilon F800 to an existing Isilon cluster. When needed, you can add an additional Isilon F800 chassis to scale performance and capacity in about a minute.

Flexibility: Powered by the OneFS operating system, Isilon F800 all-flash supports all major protocols and data access methods including NFS, SMB, HDFS, HTTP, FTP, and OpenStack Swift. This means that you can support a wide range of unstructured data applications and workloads on a single platform.

Data protection: Isilon F800 all-flash storage is highly resilient and offers N+1 through N+4 redundancy. With Isilon you may also choose from a variety of efficient and proven enterprise data backup and disaster recovery options.

Security: Isilon F800 all-flash offers a broad range of robust security options including FIPS 140-2 level 2 self-encrypting drives, role-based access control (RBAC), secure access zones, SEC 17a-4 compliant WORM data immutability, and integrated file system auditing support.
